Doppelgängers

"It’ll be just like in the movies. Pretending to be somebody else."

— Betty, Mulholland Drive

Doppelgängers explores identity, memory, and the illusion of the uncanny double – the self seen through a fractured mirror, the familiar slipping into the strange, the line between dream and reality dissolving.

Executed in acrylic paint on wood with 23K gold leaf, the three works echo the shifting layers of cinematic memory and traditional iconography, recalling the halo as both sacred aura and haunting trace. Like characters who reinvent themselves or are pursued by their own shadows, the paintings hold both surface and depth, presence and absence. Gold becomes a threshold between worlds – dazzling yet intangible, a reflection that can never fully be grasped.

The square format, repeated across three canvases, underscores the theme of doubling and recurrence: identities loop, stories fold back on themselves, and desire conjures ghosts. Just as the films that inspire this series reveal characters who are never wholly themselves, Doppelgängers invites the viewer into a space of disorientation and recognition, where the boundaries of the self blur and dissolve
